Short break support, sometimes known as respite care, is when foster carers look after children for short periods of time and is the most common type of fostering. Short break offers temporary support and relief for families and caregivers looking after children with additional needs.

In a lot of cases, everyone’s working hard to put longer-term plans in place and, best of all, to get the child back to their birth family. It’s not possible to know how long this will take, and sometimes it’s not possible at all.

This also provides a short-term break for primary carers, allowing them to recharge and attend to personal needs, whilst providing a safe and welcoming space for children to stay.
